Maths & Reasoning Skills & Science

Core Program

A comprehensive course that develops your child’s potential in the key subject areas of Mathematics, Science and General Ability. Each lesson contains 90 minutes of training in numeracy, science and thinking skills.

Course Goals
  • Develop advanced knowledge of numbers in thousands and beyond
  • Develop numerical operations
  • Develop understandings of fractions and decimals
  • Develop a range of thinking skills (general ability) concepts
  • Develop concepts of area, time and measurement using formal & informal units
  • Develop concepts of graphing, money, chance and probability
  • Develop concepts of shape, position and temperature
  • Develop basic exam techniques and problem solving skills
  • Develop knowledge of science concepts and the scientific method through theoretical and practical learning and experimentation.
Course Structure
  • 4 terms in a year, 10 weeks in a term
  • 1.5 hour lessons per week, during term
  • Can be combined with Creative Writing (Maths & Science & General Ability + Creative Writing: 2 hour lessons per week)
  • Can be combined with English (English, Maths & Science & General Ability: 3 hour lessons per week)
  • Students attend lessons at their allocated time schedule
  • Small class group based

Term 1
Week 1 — Fractions Order of Operations, PS
Week 2 — Mass (tonnes), decimal, percentages, fractions
Week 3 — Length, perimeter, coordinates, PS
Week 4 — Concept Teaching: Area, Mapping, picture graphs, PS
Week 5 — Addition of fractions, geometric patterns, PS
Week 6 — Column Graphs, volume, number sentences,revision
Week 7 — Chance, Percentages, Magic Squares, Revision, PS
Week 8 — Revision and Test, tree diagrams, money, column graphs
Week 9 — Area of Triangles, addition & Subtraction, PS
Week 10 — Reading tables, Subtraction of fractions, PS

Term 2
Week 1 — Revision-Fractions, decimals & Percentages, changing between units, shape combinations
Week 2 — Direct proportions, fractions of quantities, number patterns, critical thinking
Week 3 — Direct proportions-percentages, revision – speed, distance & time, data processing
Week 4 — Inverse proportions, Speed, distance & Time, assumptions, coding
Week 5 — PS, addition & subtraction of fractions, ratios, Logical thinking
Week 6 — PS, further ratios, multiplying fractions, logical thinking, shape patterns
Week 7 — PS, revision – volume, displacement, revision, ordering, shape patterns, logical thinking
Week 8 — Term test, spatial reasoning, multiplying fractions
Week 9 — PS, dividing fractions, surface area, logical thinking, coding
Week 10 — PS, term revision, critical thinking revision

Term 3
Week 1 — Problem Solving, Combinations, 3D solids & nets, spatial reasoning, AR – number series
Week 2 — Problem Solving, Probability, Negative Numbers, Critical Thinking, Logical thinking
Week 3 — Problem solving, counting, units of conversion, logical thinking, spatial reasoning
Week 4 — PS, Number series, finding patterns, conditional statement, directions
Week 5 — Problem solving, revision-Averages, Hectares, conditional statements, codes
Week 6 — PS, revision-counting, sum of number series, conditional statements, revision-graphs
Week 7 — Simple algebra, ordering, coding, revision – counting, finding patterns, ordering
Week 8 — Term test Applications of number patterns, graphs, PS
Week 9 — Venn Diagrams, law of multiplication, prime & composite numbers, spatial reasoning
Week 10 — Problem solving, Term revision, Data processing, spatial reasoning, probability

Term 4
Week 1 — Ratios and proportions, Algebra, General revision, PS
Week 2 — Magic sum, operation signs, revision, PS, logic and lateral thinking corner
Week 3 — Ratios & proportions, magic triangles, Venn diagrams, complex fractions, PS
Week 4 — Algebra, averages, revision – perimeter, area & volume, PS
Week 5 — Counting techniques, rations, ordering, challenging questions, PS
Week 6 — Chance & Probability, fraction, exam questions, PS
Week 7 — Area & Perimeter, miscellaneous, exam question practice, PS
Week 8 — Composite Area, Area of a triangle, logic and lateral thinking, P
Week 9 — Averages, Hidden Numbers, proportions, averages, SP
Week 10 — BODMAS, general resion, logic problem solving, concept revision
