About North Shore

Who is North Shore Coaching College?

North Shore is a coaching college catering for students from Pre-School (ages 2.5+ years old) to Year 12. We have been in operation for over 30 years. We currently have over 10,000 students throughout Australia receiving expert tuition from 1,000 teachers, at over 65 campuses in Australia and Hong Kong. Our College offers extension and support programs in addition to expertly developed term programs  to meet the wide range of educational needs of our students and to allow them to realise their potential.

Why is North Shore the best choice for my child's tuition?

We have grown to over 65 campuses largely through word of mouth. That means our loyal parents are extremely happy with the tuition we provide. The highest ever for the NSW Opportunity Class (OC) and NSW Selective School scores were achieved by two of our students and we have had thousands of success stories in OC Placement, Selective Schools Placement, Scholarship offers and state-based final examination results.

What is the maximum number of students in a classroom?

At North Shore, we limit our maximum class to 15 students per class. This is our maximum during non-COVID restriction periods. If the campus is required to adhere to the State Government’s Health guidance, than class size will vary accordingly – you will be notified via SMS/Telephone/Email for any class time and room changes.

We also offer one-on-one (private tutoring), as an alternative to your child being in a class with up to 15 students i.e. a ‘smaller class’ environment.

How successful are your students in external (e.g. Year 12, Selective, Scholarship) examinations?

Our success rate is extremely high. In our Primary Program we have over 1,000 success stories in the Selective School and OC placements.

The highest ever OC and Selective School Test scores were achieved by 2 North Shore students.

For the last few years, we are very proud of our results. For example, in the last few years, our students won over 150 scholarships on average each year.

In our High School Program, a high proportion of our HSC students achieved an ATAR of 96 to 99. They are accepted into the top universities of their choice. Over the last four years over 100 students scored 98 and 99. In the last two years we have had 10 students score an ATAR of 99.95. Many of our students have appeared on the NSW Premier’s List.

What is the percentage of students who are successful in external examinations?

We are extremely proud of our results because our percentage of success is extremely high!

It is hard to be 100% accurate because we are relying on our students to return and tell us about their results.

If they do not tell us, we are not able to count them, so our figures might be on the low side. Last year saw 1000 success stories for selective school placements and Scholarship offers.

Most families who come to North Shore are through word of mouth and they are less concerned about statistics and more about actual results their children experience. North Shore has a wonderful reputation and our parents are our most genuine recommendation.

About Our Tuition

What are your course materials like?

Our curriculum writing team consists of highly qualified and experienced teachers. They have successful backgrounds in state and national curriculum development for both private and government schools. We regularly revise and improve our teaching materials so as to be in line with any changes in school curriculum and public exams.

The College’s curriculum is a little ahead of most schools. Our programs are specially designed for students who aim for improvement, enrichment, extension and acceleration.

How does North Shore stay up-to-date with syllabus changes?

North Shore is committed to ensuring we reflect any and all changes to all curricula, such as  state-based final high school examination syllabuses and Selective School examination syllabuses.

The review of our teaching materials is an ongoing process which we undertake to ensure we deliver learning programs of the highest quality that are relevant to the needs of our students.

My child cannot attend a lesson, can I get a refund?

Absences from classes missed will not be refunded. However, a student can attend a make-up class in an equivalent class in the same week (if it is available at your preferred campus). You will need to notify the campus office in advance. You will receive a “Make-Up Slip” to hand to the Campus Director of the make-up class. After attending a make-up class, students should hand in their homework to the regular class teacher for marking.

In the event that a make-up class is not possible, the student may choose to log into the Student Area to view the lesson online (available for Primary School Students enrolled in the Fastrain Core Programs only), and collect the course materials for the lesson(s) and return the completed learning material(s) to their teacher(s) for marking.

Students who require additional assistance are welcome to use North Shore’s FREE Student Support Services.

At North Shore Education Centre, we follow the government’s regulations concerning weather conditions and the rules that schools must follow.

Typhoon
In the event of Signal No 1 or 3, the school will remain open with the option for students to attend online. When Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal 8 is issued, the school will close, and all classes will continue online.

Heavy Rain
The school will operate as usual under Amber Warning Signal. In the event of Red or Black Warning Signal, the school will close and classes will continue online.

Do you offer exam preparation courses?

Yes, we offer a variety of exam preparation tutoring courses depending on your child’s academic goals. Please visit our tutoring page and select your child’s school year to locate exam preparation tutoring courses for their school year. Please note, our tutoring course pages are constantly updated and our exam preparation courses run at various times during the school term and during the holiday program, so please check back regularly or contact your nearest campus director for a full list of our exam preparation courses and programs for your child.

What is your policy on homework?

Homework is an essential part of the North Shore ethos. Homework is set to complement the materials learnt in class. Students should hand in their homework the following lesson. Any homework handed in late may not be marked in time by the teachers.

Do you provide breaks during classes?

Yes, depending on your child’s enrolment we have allocated break times for students and we highly encourage your child to bring a snack and a drink if they have a recess break. Students are reminded to keep valuables and money in their pockets, not in their bags. North Shore will not be responsible for any loss of property.

My child is extremely bright and says the work is far too easy. Can they jump a level?

In the majority of cases this is not recommended as it can lead to holes in a child’s concepts and skills. Decisions regarding jumping level are made by the senior directors. There must be strong evidence for them to consider a student jumping a level. Your child would have to undergo a further assessment before this could be considered.

Teaching

What can my child expect on their first lesson at North Shore?

The work your child undertakes at North Shore may be more difficult than your child’s regular work at school. Your child may find the work challenging to begin with.

Do not be afraid to ask the teacher for assistance. Your child will become familiar with the work requirements throughout the term. You and your child may also make use of our free Student Support Services such as the Homework Support via the Student Login, Homework telephone line and drop-ins at participating campuses and at differing times. Please consult your Campus Directors for service availability and times.

What kind of teachers do you hire?

All of our teachers have current Working with Children Checks. Our teachers are highly qualified and very experienced.

All of our teachers have undergone our own further training programs that have been developed in conjunction with the Western Sydney University.

Our teachers set high goals for the students so that excellent results can be achieved. Some of our teachers are external examination markers. They approach teaching in a highly professional manner ensuring thorough coverage of content and constructive feedback on homework assignments.

What are the methods you use to teach students?

We use a “face-to-face” teaching methodology encouraging creativity and lateral thinking. We use both open ended and closed questioning techniques to assist students in extending the knowledge of relevant concepts. The students are given a set of quality course materials every lesson. Our teachers will use 2/3 of the time teaching key concepts and examples. The remaining 1/3 of the lesson will be used for guided exercises to ensure students fully understand the topic being taught for the lesson.

How do you keep me updated on my child's progress?

The teachers will write a Progress Report for each student at the end of each term. You will be informed of how your child has performed in the term. The teacher will also nominate the best and most improved student in the class for the appropriate certificates and trophies as encouragement.

Will my child improve when they start coaching?

The degree of improvement will depend on your child’s commitment to his studies and his current level of skills and knowledge. You will be able to discuss your child’s improvement with the teacher after they have been attending classes for a number of weeks. You will also receive report cards each term to help you track improvement.

Since our courses are usually more demanding than the work your child may be doing at school, he/she may require some time to adjust to our system before you see the improvement.

Is there a reward system for students at North Shore?

Yes, North Shore Coaching College has a Student Award System.

Encouragement is one of the essential elements that leads to success in a student’s pursuit of academic excellence. Sustainable encouragement assists to build self-confidence and helps students to maintain focus.

The North Shore Student Award System consists of the following:

Both our Fastrain Extended Program and High Achiever Program begin preparing students for Selective High School Test & Scholarship Exams from Term 1 of Year 5 and will continue to do so until Year 6 Term 1 of the following year. The course focusses on the development of key skills, through exercises, hints & tips, and mock tests. New and exciting writing materials have been integrated into the program to ensure comprehensive development of writing skills. The English component offers a wide coverage of advanced comprehension skills drawn from stimulus materials based on various genres, plus grammar, vocabulary usage, extension exercises and exam techniques. The Maths & Thinking Skills component incorporates essential key maths and lateral thinking concepts and also provides a systematic approach to helping students work on various types of questions encountered in both The Selective Schools Test and Scholarship exams.

As an integral part of our training, all Year 5 students will undertake a MOCK EXAM program of practice tests in Writing, English, Maths & Thinking Skills. The MOCK EXAMS are held in class. The schedule is:

  • Year 5 Term 2 — 1 exam
  • Year 5 Term 3 — 2 exams
  • Year 5 Term 4 — 2 exams
  • Year 6 Term 1 — 1 exam

A systematic approach in imparting the students with essential concepts, building up their confidence as well as improving speed & accuracy in tests constitute important milestones for exam success.

Competitions & Assessments

Can my child sit competitions and assessments with North Shore?

As part of our holistic approach to education, North Shore offers students an opportunity to participate in Competitions and Assessments run by prestigious organisations worldwide. Some include ICAS Assessments™, Australian Maths Trust’s Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) and the Computational & Algorithmic (CAT) Competition, South East Asian Mathematics Olympiad (SEAMO) and the best preparation for Selective and Opportunity Class (OC for NSW only) exam preparation: Selective Written Assessment Test (SWAT).

Will the students be sitting the paper or online version of the test?

Each competition and assessment testing modes varies.

The 2021 Computational & Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) Competition is a paper-based test.

The 2021 Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) Competition is a paper-based test.

The 2021 ICAS Assessments™  is an online-based test, including the ‘Writing’ assessment. So please ensure your child brings a compatible device, with a compatible browser, and that a lock-down browser is installed for subjects that require a lock-down browser. Please refer to the ICAS Assessments™  Terms and Conditions for information on the conditions for sitting the ICAS Assessments™  in 2021 at North Shore Coaching College.

The 2021 Selective Written Assessment Test (SWAT) is a paper-based test.

I'm trying to register for your competitions but it says 'Allocation Exhausted' what does this mean?

‘Allocation Exhausted’ will appear on our online registration for Competitions & Assessments when a particular competition ‘ticket date’ and ‘time’ session has reached its maximum capacity. Meaning you will not be able to book for that particular date and time session as the campus has reached its allowable limit. Each campus has a different maximum capacity/allowable limit and this is set based on classroom size, classroom availability, resourcing and current COVID-Safe premise guidelines.

Once a session has reached maximum capacity (i.e. Allocation Exhausted), it is at the College’s discretion whether additional sessions will be opened (if at all).

I booked for some competitions for my 2 kids via your website. I’ve noticed that the payment went through 3 times instead of twice? Why did this happen and can you please provide me with a refund for the 3rd charge?

We apologise for the inconvenience, please contact us at [email protected] and provide us with the following details so we can review your registration and payment records:

1. Your children’s full name and DOB (so we can verify your registrations).

2. The credit card transaction record i.e. screenshot of the transactions from your bank’s online portal – if possible).

Do you sell past papers for my child to practice before they sit the competitions/assessments?

Yes, we have an extensive range of educational books, past exam papers and past competition papers for your child to review and practice as part of their exam and competition preparation. Please visit our shop: North Shore Shop at www.northshoreshop.com.au.

Why is your sitting window for the competition different to that as advertised on the official competition's website?

As an approved and Authorised Testing centre for the Australian Maths Trust (AMT), ICAS Assessments™ , Selective Written Assessment Test (SWAT) and the South East Asian Mathematical Olympiad (SEAMO) competitions and assessments, North Shore Coaching College have been provided with a specific open-window in which our campuses can host the competitions within these set dates.

The dates advertised on the official competition’s website are the dates when Australian and/or International Public and Private schools are to undertake the competition.

Can I register in person for any of the competitions at my child's campus?

Setting

Is it true I need to pack headphones/earphones or an earbud for ICAS Spelling Bee?

Yes. The ICAS Spelling Bee assessment requires audio and you need to ensure you pack a set of headphones, earphones or earbuds for ICAS Spelling Bee. Please check the headphones, earphones or earbuds are operating prior to sending your child for the ICAS. If required, please ensure the headphones are fully charged and the bluetooth/connectivity is enabled/paired with the compatible device and/or your child is equipped to be able to enable/pair the devices on the day of the assessment.

Should you forget to pack a set of headphones, earphones or earbuds for ICAS Spelling Bee, there may be a charge for North Shore to supply brand new headphones, earphones or earbuds for your child to sit the ICAS Spelling Bee. However supply is not guaranteed and various from state to state.

For ICAS Assessments, why are your advertised times longer than the official ICAS Assessment duration?

ICAS Assessments at North Shore Coaching College’s Principal Campuses vary in duration. Our advertised assessment length are independent of the designated ICAS exam session times/assessment lengths as extra time is needed to allowed for orderly entry and exit from our premises and to ensure proper functioning of devices for all students.

For ICAS Assessments, I was wondering whether the currently announced ICAS dates are likely to remain the only dates or whether other dates might be released later?

It is at the College’s discretion whether additional sessions will be opened (if at all), once a session has reached maximum capacity. But overall, we are limited to ICAS/Janison’s opening window of ICAS Assessment ‘allowable sitting dates’.

Is ICAS Assessments free of charge? Our child currently studies with you at one of your campuses.

To sit ICAS Assessments at North Shore Coaching College, each ICAS Assessment subject (except Writing), in 2021 cost $40, with the Writing assessment costing $45.

All pricing is inclusive of GST, all transaction fees, free WIFI and supervision on the assessment day, inclusive of administration costs involved in registration to ICAS Assessments and all communication related to your child’s registration.

Why is the price to sit ICAS Assessment at North Shore more expensive than to sit ICAS Assessment according to the ICAS website?

The price for each ICAS Assessment has been set according to the following considerations:

1. The price in which ICAS Assessment/Janison charges North Shore Coaching College;

2. The cost to employ exam invigilators to supervise students sitting the assessments;

3. The opportunity cost of  allocating classrooms for ICAS Assessments when usual North Shore classes would be running at the same time;

4. All merchant transaction fees;

5. WIFI services to allow your child to take the ICAS Assessment; as they are now 100% online (most campus had to incur upfront costs to upgrade their sites to enable strong WIFI signals so students can sit and complete their ICAS Assessments);

6. Administration, Marketing and IT costs to successfully launch, operate and run the entire operation.

Can I sit the ICAS Assessment at home?

No. Despite the ICAS Assessments being 100% online, all students are to attend in person and bring their own device to sit ICAS Assessments at their registered campus venue, as outlined in their email confirmation.

Am I allowed to pick up my child earlier than the advertised competition/assessment end time?

Students cannot be asked to be removed from the classroom before the advertised end time for any competitions and assessments held at North Shore Coaching College.

My child sat the Southeast Asian Mathematical Olympiad (SEAMO) competition in 2020 but I haven't received their results yet, how do I get their results?

I registered my child to sit SEAMO 2021 via the North Shore website, however I can't seem to log in to the SEAMO Portal to access practice questions as they require a 'Candidate Number'?

If you have registered your child for SEAMO 2021 for the first time via the North Shore website i.e. www.north-shore.com.au/competition please note North Shore is uploading student registrations in bulk every month to the SEAMO Portal. When an upload is successful, you will receive an email from SEAMO directly with your Candidate Number.
