About North Shore

Who is North Shore Coaching College?

North Shore Coaching College (NSCC) is a national provider of out-of-school hours academic tuition services for students 3 – 18 years old. Founded in 1991, we have over 65 campuses Australia-wide (spanning Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and Perth), and in Hong Kong.

We have thousands of students receiving expert tuition from hundreds of tutors. Our College offers extension and support programs in addition to expertly developed term programs to meet the wide range of educational needs of our students and to allow them to realise their potential.

Why is North Shore the best choice for my child's tuition?

We have grown to over 65 campuses largely through word of mouth. That means our loyal parents are extremely happy with the tuition we provide. We have had thousands of success stories in school placement into scholarships, private school entry, OC, Selective high school, GATE and high achieving students in state-based final examination results.

What is the maximum number of students in a classroom?

At North Shore, we generally keep to a maximum class of 15 students per class.

We also offer one-on-one (private tutoring), as an alternative to your child being in a class with up to 15 students i.e. a ‘smaller class’ environment.

How successful are your students in external (e.g. Year 12, Selective, Scholarship) examinations?

We have an impressive success rate and have assisted thousands of students into schools of their choice – whether this is selective schools, opportunity classes, scholarships or private school entry.

In our High School Program, students have achieved high rankings and high ATAR scores in external exams and competitions.

What is the percentage of students who are successful in external examinations?

We are extremely proud of our results because our percentage of success is extremely high!

It is hard to be 100% accurate because we are relying on our students to return and tell us about their results.

If they do not tell us, we are not able to count them, so our figures might be on the low side.

Most families who come to North Shore are through word of mouth and they are less concerned about statistics and more about actual results their children experience. North Shore has a wonderful reputation and our parents are our most genuine recommendation.

Enrolment

How can I enrol my child?

After attending a make-up class, students should hand in their homework to the regular class tutor for marking.

Do you offer exam preparation courses?

Yes, we offer a variety of exam preparation tutoring courses depending on your child’s academic goals. Please visit our tutoring page and select your child’s school year to locate exam preparation tutoring courses for their school year. Please note, our tutoring course pages are constantly updated and our exam preparation courses run at various times during the school term and during the holiday program, so please check back regularly or contact your nearest campus director for a full list of our exam preparation courses and programs for your child.

What is your policy on homework?

Homework is an essential part of the North Shore ethos. Homework is set to complement the materials learnt in class. Students should hand in their homework the following lesson. Any homework handed in late may not be marked in time by the tutors.

Do you provide breaks during classes?

Yes, depending on your child’s enrolment we have allocated break times for students and we highly encourage your child to bring a snack and a drink if they have a recess break. Students are reminded to keep valuables and money in their pockets, not in their bags. North Shore will not be responsible for any loss of property.

My child is extremely bright and says the work is far too easy. Can they jump a level?

In the majority of cases this is not recommended as it can lead to holes in a child’s concepts and skills. Decisions regarding jumping level are made by the senior directors. There must be strong evidence for them to consider a student jumping a level. Your child would have to undergo a further assessment before this could be considered.

Teaching

What can my child expect on their first lesson at North Shore?

The work your child undertakes at North Shore may be more difficult than your child’s regular work at school. Your child may find the work challenging to begin with.

Do not be afraid to ask the tutor for assistance. Your child will become familiar with the work requirements throughout the term. You and your child may also make use of our free Student Support Services such as the Homework Support via the Student Login, Homework telephone line and drop-ins at participating campuses and at differing times. Please consult your Campus Directors for service availability and times.

What kind of tutors do you hire?

All of our tutors have current Working with Children Checks. Our educators are  enthusiastic and experienced.

Our tutors set high goals for the students so that excellent results can be achieved. Some of our tutors are external examination markers. They approach teaching in a highly professional manner ensuring thorough coverage of content and constructive feedback on homework assignments.

What are the methods you use to teach students?

We use a “face-to-face” teaching methodology encouraging creativity and lateral thinking. We use both open ended and closed questioning techniques to assist students in extending the knowledge of relevant concepts. The students are given a set of quality course materials every lesson. Our tutors will use 2/3 of the time teaching key concepts and examples. The remaining 1/3 of the lesson will be used for guided exercises to ensure students fully understand the topic being taught for the lesson.

How do you keep me updated on my child's progress?

The tutors will write a Progress Report for each student at the end of each term. You will be informed of how your child has performed in the term. The tutor will also nominate the best and most improved student in the class for the appropriate certificates and trophies as encouragement.

Will my child improve when they start coaching?

The degree of improvement will depend on your child’s commitment to his studies and his current level of skills and knowledge. You will be able to discuss your child’s improvement with the tutor after they have been attending classes for a number of weeks. You will also receive report cards each term to help you track improvement.

Since our courses are usually more demanding than the work your child may be doing at school, he/she may require some time to adjust to our system before you see the improvement.

Is there a reward system for students at North Shore?

Yes, North Shore Coaching College has a Student Award System.

Encouragement is one of the essential elements that leads to success in a student’s pursuit of academic excellence. Sustainable encouragement assists to build self-confidence and helps students to maintain focus.

Students will be required to sit for an Entrance Exam before being offered placement in this prestigious Program. A large number of full, half or quarter Scholarship will be offered to successful Year 4 students.

The High Achiever Program runs from Term 1 Year 5 through until Term 1 of Year 6.

How does North Shore prepare Fastrain/High Achiever students for Selective High School & Scholarship Exam success?

Both our Fastrain Extended Program and High Achiever Program begin preparing students for Selective High School Test & Scholarship Exams from Term 1 of Year 5 and will continue to do so until Year 6 Term 1 of the following year. The course focusses on the development of key skills, through exercises, hints & tips, and mock tests. New and exciting writing materials have been integrated into the program to ensure comprehensive development of writing skills. The English component offers a wide coverage of advanced comprehension skills drawn from stimulus materials based on various genres, plus grammar, vocabulary usage, extension exercises and exam techniques. The Maths & Thinking Skills component incorporates essential key maths and lateral thinking concepts and also provides a systematic approach to helping students work on various types of questions encountered in both The Selective Schools Test and Scholarship exams.

As an integral part of our training, all Year 5 students will undertake a MOCK EXAM program of practice tests in Writing, English, Maths & Thinking Skills. The MOCK EXAMS are held in class. The schedule is:

  • Year 5 Term 2 — 1 exam
  • Year 5 Term 3 — 2 exams
  • Year 5 Term 4 — 2 exams
  • Year 6 Term 1 — 1 exam

A systematic approach in imparting the students with essential concepts, building up their confidence as well as improving speed & accuracy in tests constitute important milestones for exam success.

Do you offer additional programs for exam preparation?

Yes! In addition to the standard Fastrain Extended and High Achiever programs, North Shore offers various Exam Preparation Programs. Students seeking Scholarships and Selective Schools placements are strongly advised to undertake the Exam Preparation Programs.
