[NSW] The Comprehensive Guide to Opportunity Class (OC) Schools in 2026
What They Are, How the Test Works, and How to Help Your Child Prepare
Choosing the right learning environment for your child is one of the biggest decisions families make in primary school. If your child shows strong academic ability and enjoys being challenged, you may have heard about Opportunity Classes (OC) — selective classes for high-potential students entering Year 5 and Year 6.
This guide breaks down the key things parents should know, in clear and simple terms.
What Are Opportunity Classes?
Opportunity Classes (often called OC classes) are special programs in selected NSW public primary schools. They are designed for children who learn quickly, grasp new concepts easily, and thrive on deeper academic challenges.
In an OC class, students benefit from:
- Faster-paced lessons
- Extension work in Reading, Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills
- Learning with peers who have similar academic strengths
- Teachers trained to support high-potential learners
NSW offers about 1,840 places each year for students entering Year 5.
Who Should Consider an OC Program?
Families often explore OCs if their child:
- Regularly performs above grade level
- Shows curiosity, independence, and a strong desire to learn
- Benefits from a structured, academically-focused environment
- Enjoys problem-solving and complex thinking tasks

It’s also important to think about school placement — some children may need to move schools to attend their OC class. To check which primary schools offer OC classes, visit here.
How the OC Application Process Works
Students apply in Year 4 for entry into Year 5 the following year.
Key steps for parents
- Apply online during the application window (November–February).
- Sit the OC Placement Test, held in May.
- Receive results and offers around Term 3.
- If offered a place, parents accept online and prepare for the school transition.
Understanding the OC Test
The OC Placement Test is computer-based and assesses three skill areas:
1. Reading — 40 minutes | 14 questions
The Reading Test now has 14 questions and runs for 40 minutes. There is a new question type where children choose the correct word or phrase to complete short passages (similar to a cloze test). This section checks how well students understand meaning, tone, vocabulary and context.
2. Mathematical Reasoning (35 questions, ~40 minutes)
Assesses logical numeracy, number sense, patterns, and applied maths.
3. Thinking Skills (30 questions, ~30 minutes)
Includes problem-solving, critical reasoning, spatial thinking and logic.
4. How results are shown
Students receive performance bands, not raw scores, giving families a sense of how their child performed compared with other students.
After the results are released, families also receive a Performance Report, which breaks down how the student performed in each test component (Reading, Mathematical Reasoning, Thinking Skills). This helps parents understand strengths and areas for growth.
