Australian Mathematics Competition (Gosford, NSW)

We are proud to announce that North Shore Coaching College is an authorised Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) Testing Centre. The AMC has been held annually since 1978, and is administered by the Australian Maths Trust (AMT), which is under the Trusteeship of the University of Canberra.  Currently, students in over 30 countries sit this competition. Your child is invited to participate through North Shore Coaching College.

North Shore Coaching College is offering the competition in paper format.

The AMC aims to be accessible to all students from Years 3 to 12, not just the mathematically gifted. There is an emphasis on problem solving, and the questions are designed to recognise and stimulate talent that is not so readily identified in normal assessment, and to be fun for the student. The problems are designed to test mathematical thinking rather than focus on calculations themselves, thus such questions are designed so that they can be answered just as quickly without a calculator as with one. The AMC consists of five separate papers, each with 30 questions in the Middle Primary (Years 3 and 4), Upper Primary (Years 5 and 6), Junior (Years 7 and 8), Intermediate (Years 9 and 10) and Senior (Years 11 and 12) divisions. Time allowed is 60 minutes for the primary papers and 75 minutes for the secondary papers. The first 25 questions are multiple choice with 5 choices. The last 5 questions have an integer answer between 0 and 999. Questions 1 to 10 are worth 3 points, 11 to 20 are worth 4 points and 21 to 25 are worth 5 points. Questions 26 to 30 are worth 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 points, respectively. No penalties apply for wrong attempts. Maximum score equals 135 points.

All students receive a certificate and a detailed report showing how they performed on each problem with wider statistical rankings. Over 1,000 students share the prizes and around 50% of participants qualify to receive a Certificate of High Distinction, Distinction or Credit. All other entrants in the competition receive a Certificate of Participation or a Proficiency Certificate. Medals are awarded to students with an outstanding result.

North Shore Coaching College offers the Australian Mathematics Competition to all students, providing that they will NOT be sitting the Australian Mathematics Competition at their school. All fees paid are non-refundable and non-transferable. 

North Shore Coaching College has past AMC papers that may be purchased to assist your child to prepare for the examination. These past papers provide a valuable opportunity to gain test experience whilst acquainting candidates with the style and content of possible question types. All fees paid are non-refundable under any circumstances. North Shore Coaching College reserves the right to cancel enrolment due to capacity issues, in which case a full refund will be made.

Please complete separate bookings for each child you wish to enter; i.e. select desired tickets for Sibling 1, register, and complete payment, then come back to this page and repeat the process for Sibling 2, and so on.
